Confucius Didn't Say That!: Pop Song Edition

It's time again to explore the deep, seedy under belly of the internet. No, not the "dark net" but FAKE CONFUCIUS QUOTES.

You see people love Confucius so much, they can't get enough of his treasures in the Analects, so they just start making up quotations from Confucius. Think of it like fan fic for ancient Chinese philosophy fans. In this post, you'll be treated to two fake quotes that I was recently delighted to discover. When I read this back-to-back (see below) they read like some terrible pop lyrics. So, I was inspired.

In fact, they were some of the top quotes offered up by the website Google.com. I highlighted them below.

Check it out, the top results for Confucius quotes only gets 10% accuracy on Google. Pathetic. Free cupcake if you can pick out the right one. Please email me ASAP at freecupcakeforconfucius@gmail.com to enter to win. No purchase necessary. Contest expires June 1, 2098.

Quote #1: "Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart" - Confucius

Of all the quotes I have covered so far this is possibly the most obvious fake quote from Confucius.  Where to even begin?

First, I think the inclusion of 'Wheresoever" probably really impresses the common idiot. Like, it sounds so smart. Anyway, I digress. I have often repeated on the themes and style of Confucius and frankly, you can read it again over here.  Or you can trust me. Just trust me and let me walk you through this. Does this quote sound like it would come from the mouth of someone in China 2,500 years ago?

(No, no it doesn't if you're wondering)

Let's dig a little deeper into the word "heart" as seen in the Analects. As usual, I use Muller's translation . I am rather fond of his clarity and his helpful notes.

When you search the term "heart" you come up with these three quotations:

1:6: “A young man should serve his parents at home and be respectful to elders outside his home. He should be earnest and truthful, loving all, but become intimate with his innate good-heartedness. After doing this, if he has energy to spare, he can study literature and the arts.”

2:4  “At fifteen my heart was set on learning; at thirty I stood firm; at forty I was unperturbed; at fifty I knew the mandate of heaven; at sixty my ear was obedient; at seventy I could follow my heart's desire without transgressing the norm.”

7:1 “I am a transmitter, rather than an original thinker. I trust and enjoy the teachings of the ancients. In my heart I compare myself to old Peng.”

There's another quote attributed to Yao (one of Confucius' followers) about "gain(ing) the people's trust" but that's it.

In Confucius' usage of the term "heart", there's nothing remotely similar to the quotation above, so I scrolled through 5 pages of Google to find who actually said this quotation. All I could find were endless Etsy pages trying to sell me more crap with this crap quote on it, I find it very unlikely someone transliterated an actual Confucius quote.

An aside about "heart".....

I suppose we should address the term "heart" before going any further. I did a little searching for the Chinese term translated by Muller as 'heart" but I am a little testy today, so I didn't dig that far. So, I am not 100% clear on the term "heart" as used by Confucius (via Muller). Furthermore, once I really started thinking about the term "heart" in English, I became a little unclear on the term as well. Is my heart different from my "soul"? Does the quote above refer to my authentic self or does it mean that I should remember compassion where ever I go?

There's a quote in the Analects that is somewhat similar but it's a stretch....

8:13: “Be of unwavering good faith and love learning. Be steadfast unto death in pursuit of the good Way. Do not enter a state which is in peril, nor reside in one which people have rebelled. When the Way prevails in the world, show yourself. When it does not, then hide. When the Way prevails in your own state, to be poor and obscure is a disgrace. But when the Way does not prevail in your own state, to be rich and honored is a disgrace.”

14:42: Zi Lu asked about the qualities of the noble man. Confucius said, “He cultivates himself by comforting others.”“Is that all?”“He cultivates himself by comforting everyone. Now, this is something that even Yao and Shun found difficult.”

Both quotes talk about a favorite theme of Confucius, which is consistency and the building of self-consistency and character.  In the first quote, Confucius is likely referencing the idea of the dao. The idea that "The Way" or the correct way is a natural one, that man is often out of harmony with the dao but can learn and work to achieve harmony with, though self-cultivation. Again, it's a bit of a stretch but the whole idea is that you take "it" with out, no matter what.

The second quote, I took as addressing the more "compassionate heart" definition. That one who takes his or her heart with her everywhere will be able to comfort those in need, wherever they may be.

I can't find who originally said this lame quote and I don't care, like I said, I'm a little salty tonight.

I mean, sure take your heart everywhere you go but don't forget to brush your teeth and look both ways before you cross a street while you're at it.

This is an utterly forgettable quote, it's fluff surrounded by Styrofoam peanuts. No one can disagree with it and it reveals nothing about life that you didn't already know. The quote sucks and Confucius didn't say it.

Quote # 2: "I want you to be everything that's you, deep at the center of your being" - Confucius

Let me just start by saying I simultaneously hate and love this fake Confucius quote. It's so ludicrous and yet I think I smiled when I first read it. Both of these quotes read like obscenely bad "boy band" lyrics.

It may seem obvious if you know anything about Confucius, but to be clear, Confucius would not use the term "deep at the center of your being". Nor do I think he would even know what that means. In fact, I have no idea what that means, although I have a strong belief, it's likely just some new-age mumbo-jumbo.

What I think is really going on here gets at the heart of this whole project, which reveals Western attitudes and beliefs about ancient China, Confucius and to a lesser extent, modern China.

My guess is most Americans can't name one specific fact about Confucius other than he is from China and wise. That said, Americans that had some idea about who Confucius was might describe him as wise, elegant, noble and exotic. There would be significant overlap with American beliefs of Buddha as well. Therefore, mysterious, quasi-spiritual, wise-sounding quotes seem to fit the bill to most Americans as "Confucian sounding" or even "Buddha sounding".

Confucius never said anything that could be remotely considered "new age". So, let's first unpack the quote itself.

I understand this quote to be about being your authentic self, no matter the circumstances. The assumption is that humans are "centered" when we are our true selves. If we are centered, we will be better people to our friends, families, co-workers, etc.

The idea of an authentic self would be a foreign concept to Confucius and most ancient people. This belief stems from an individualistic, Western preoccupation with one's self.  One of an individual's major life goals is to find self-actualization. In fact, my culture says that "finding myself" and isn't really selfish, but necessary for me, even if it hurts others. Being an American, I am somewhat sympathetic to this perspective, but I can also see its glaring faults and excesses as well.

Confucius would condemn any outlook that emphasizes personal fulfillment above that of others. In fact, it is in suppressing one's own self that makes one righteous.

1:6: The Master said: “A young man should serve his parents at home and be respectful to elders outside his home. He should be earnest and truthful, loving all, but become intimate with his innate good-heartedness. After doing this, if he has energy to spare, he can study literature and the arts.”

(Didya notice I just used this quote twice in the same blog post? If so, give yourself a good slap on the back, smarty pants!)

In a Confucian system, the individual situates oneself in vertical relationships. Vertical relationships are based on knowing one's place in that relationship. When operating correctly, society moves in harmony. When there is disorder, it stems first from the household and then outward.  While one's parents come first, this same attitude extends to interpersonal relations (10:12) and later as the individual operates in larger society (12:2).

10:12: When the ruler would send a gift of cooked food, he would always sit straight and first taste it; if the ruler sent uncooked meat, he would always cook it and offer it to others; when the ruler presented him with a live animal, he would always rear it. When attending at a meal for the ruler, after the ruler makes the sacrifice, he is first to eat it.

[12:2] Zhong Gong asked about the meaning of ren. The Master said: “When you are out in the world, act as if meeting an important guest. Employ the people as if you were assisting at a great ceremony. What you don't want done to yourself, don't do to others. Live in your town without stirring up resentments, and live in your household without stirring up resentments.”

Once again I am stumped on who said this in the first place. I had never seen this quote before tonight and I am pretty sure I would have noticed it before. That said, the oldest link I could find was from a Yahoo Answers from 2011. Maybe it's that person's fault.

Even devoid of attributing the quote to someone famous or wise, this is an awful little proverb.

Actually, it's beyond awful, it's terrible.  Try this one instead, it's a "teacher-based" quote but true nonetheless.

[15:16] The Master said: “If a man doesn't continually question, ‘What is it? What is it?’I don't know what I can do for him.”

Slip Slidin' Fragments

Another spring semester is in the books. Here's a bunch of fragments on stuff.

Earlier this semester I noticed how many people back into parking spaces. I am officially perplexed by this behavior, especially when someone is directly in back of you, and it holds up traffic. Is it really that important to get out that quickly? I dunno, maybe there is less of a chance of running over someone, but I am doubtful that's going through anyone's mind. Just pull in and get out of my way.

So I went to the the Breeders concert last month, and by a confluence of events (co-workers invited me and I was feeling FOMO) I ended up at an Everclear/Local H/Marcy's Playground concert. Did it reek of desperation? Maybe a little. At the Breeders there was a sense of coolness and there were actually young people there. This....not so much. At once I felt old and young at same time. Like there are people 3-5 years older than me but looked 10 years older than me. I had the same feeling at my 6th grader's band swim party, most of the parents looked like what adults looked like when I was kid. I felt awkward although I'll get there soon enough .

Anyway, back to the concert. Each band brought something to the stage and Marcy's Playground surprisingly did not suck...so there's that. Also, Art sounded like he might die on stage. I was put off with his emphasis on later releases (Songs from an American Movie or whatever) but whatever, I am sure he is bored of "Heartspark Dollar sign" (I was sad that wasn't played).  So, after years of not going to a concert, I will be going to three concerts in the last three months (Weezer/Pixies is at the end of next month). How about that?

Free Comic Book Day came and went and and the kids and I have an annual tradition of going. It's so fun and it's our little holiday. First, donuts in the morning, followed by getting in line at our local shop (which allows one copy of as many of the comics as you like), followed by the used book store (that usually has at least one free comic), followed by Cane's and the pet store. I love it (and so does K, as it gives her a break and quiet house for the whole morning and a chunk of the afternoon).

It's hot in SA already. I hate the summer, it makes me want to curse for no good reason.  It's too damn hot this early. Oddly enough this spring had been extremely mild until now.

So, the kids and I will be in a local church production of The Wizard of Oz. Look, it's kinda a big deal (okay, I am kidding but kinda not  as they put on a good show). E was in Annie in the winter, and, I gotta say the production and talent was pretty impressive. I had been fooling around with the kids, doing a the Wizard's voice, which led to them pleading with me to audition for the Wizard. So, I relented and well...what can I say? I was pretty good and they cast me as the Wizard (and of course Professor Marvel). We start rehearsing next Saturday and performances start in late July.

I am so sick of Slime. Slime videos, making slime, the kids playing with slime, talking about slime, taking out the slime during dinner, sneaking slime back to their rooms, more YOUTUBE slime videos. SLIME SLIME SLIME. SLIME. I hate it. Also, SLIME.

Thinking of some art projects I can take on this summer but not sure if I want to concentrate on painting or writing. Also, there's our "Study Stateside" project to work on as well that has already eaten many hours of my life....so, we'll see. Well, and Oz will be eating my free time as well. So, maybe not so much. The tortured life of an artist at heart.

Hey, I gotta go, so stop reading about Trump and worrying and start acting. Also, don't forget to water the grass, it's hot out there.

I saw The Breeders in Austin, here's a concert review

The year was 1998.

Or maybe it was 1999.

I had picked up Last Splash in the bargain bin a few years ago but it hadn't clicked with me. There is so much more music to consume when you're in college, so even though the album didn't gel with me, I was still happy to pick it up for "Cannonball" and "Divine Hammer" alone. So I moved on to  other albums and pretty much forgot about Last Splash. However, in the late 90's I was working out and I was bored, so I took Last Splash along.

Somewhere during a crazy long bike ride up an imaginary hill, "Do You Love Me Now?" came on and it punched me in the chest. How could this album not clicked with me?

Sure, there's some slow songs but they're weird, slow good songs (hello "Roi").  I've always thought Last Splash  was a prefect combination of surf and grunge, thoughtful but fun.  The soundscape is served on a  on a canvas of angst, forlorn love and...well, I guess bongs.  It's not a perfect album, but it's a perfect 90's album. It's charming, sad and above all, catchy. You will be humming the guitar melodies just as much as  the vocal melodies when you get hooked on the album. I can't go on without mentioning  Kim and Kelley Deal's vocals. Kim has this breathy thing going on that is amazing (surprisingly not annoying) and when the sisters sing together, it's quite lovely.

On a side note, I always loved that the band didn't try to sell itself as a "girl band" but as a band that happened to have three woman. Kim Deal was (and is) hot, in part, because she doesn't give a damn what you think.

All this is to say that the album, like all good albums, slowly weaseled its way into my heart.

Once Napster came around I quickly picked up Safari and parts of Pod...and I also discovered the lovely and beautiful Hank William's cover,  "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)", which was a b-side off the "Divine Hammer" single.

So damn good.

I was pretty obsessed with their discography for awhile so I was excited when I learned they were coming back in the early 2000's. However, I was a disappointed with both  Title TK and Mountain Battles.   Both albums (with a few exceptions) seemed to lack the sugar rush and charm of Last Splash. The albums seemed more straight ahead, less playful but to be honest, I have never given either album a fair shake. My favorite song of this era is the insanely good cover of "Wicked Little Town".

All this is to say when I heard a new The Breeders album was in the works last year, I was still excited to hear the new songs. I was unable to see them the last time they played in Austin, but this time I wouldn't let the opportunity pass.

Last year I had missed out on Spoon tickets here in SA (sold out in less than 3 minutes), so I was determined not to miss out on The Breeders. The concert was in Austin at Emo's and it is a much larger venue than the Aztec for Spoon and there were plenty of tickets.  I told a colleague who loves 90's rock and he decided he would join me. He's a bit of a stoner so I thought for sure he would be high or get high, but he was stone cold sober the whole trip.

We left for Austin and had possibly the best traffic I have ever had on my way to Austin. We left SA around 6:45 on a Saturday night and there was no traffic, it was as if it God had cleared the way for us to be perfectly on-time. We arrived at Emos' a little after 8:00, and walked right in after a security check point, reminding me that it was 2018 and not 1999.

I had never been to Emo's and it was pretty cool place. Spacious, clean and reasonably priced drinks. Couldn't complain a bit. I bought a Lone Star (it was cheap) and C bought a Dos XX as we waited for the first band to start.

A punk band from Baltimore, Post Pink opened and they were impressively loud and energetic. A dash of the Ramones with a little more anger/straight ahead rock. I liked 'em. They were a perfect opener, as their songs were short and to the point. I never got bored. They definitely left you wanting more, but satisfied with what you got. Two of the members looked like they had stepped out of 1985.

As Post Pink finished up their set, I realized Emo's was packed. It was a great turnout, and we had a great spot. About 15-20 feet from the stage, dead center, with no TALL GUYS in sight.

After a short break, The Breeders took the stage, opening with the opener from Last Splash, "New Year" followed by the banger from the new album, "Wait in the Car".  They pretty much played the new album but with heavy doses of Last Splash with a proper sprinkling of some of the best stuff from over the years.

It's a crappy phone photo to prove I was there.
The band was in high spirits, laughing, joking, generally looking like they were having a great time.  Well except Josephine. She just rocked out on bass, calmly, like a cool glass of water.  Kim was smiling the whole time and said "thank you" after every song, as if she wasn't expecting us to clap. Later, before "Drivin' on 9" she was giving Kelley a hard time, saying "She's even weirder than she is on stage" or something to that effect.  The band was tight for the most part with rarely a slip up and Kim, Kelley and Josephine sounded fantastic.

Drivin' on 9
I was loving the concert and I was just happy as a lark but it felt like something was missing....what was it? I mean, an extra beer would have been nice (I had to stop at two as I was driving that night), but that wasn't it.

The band finished up their set, and of course, it was time for the encore. Then it hit me. Yup, I had forgotten the song that captured my imagination all those years ago, "Do You Love Me Now?" started up, I whooped and hollered with excitement. I sang along with pleasure, never really thinking I would have the opportunity to sing along with this particular song.  I was worried about the harmonies, but they pulled it off like pros. Absolutely beautiful.

So, this show is definitely in my top five concert going experiences. It just had a certain quality that I can't put my finger on.  So if you're scoring at home, here's my top five concerts (not really in order, except for the first). Also, had to add a sixth concert on there too. That one is blog worthy all by itself.

C's Donald Trump Poem

My 12 year-old had an assignment to write a poem about someone or something that upset them. She wrote about Trump. I love this kid!!

One day it may be lost in the sands of time, so I am going to preserve it here! It had to start with"this is just to say"....

This is just to say

This is just to say….
I’m worried about your mental health
You act like a child when you're in your 70’s,
You made fun of a disabled man,
You are rude and racist,
You have very bad grammar,
You even married a woman in her 20’s even though you are 71!
You dyed your hair thinking it would do you better, but it did the very opposite,
Why oh why?
You make me think if I’ll ever live past my 20’s.
Trump, Trump, brainless Trump….
Why do you even try?
You know you only won because of the Russians…
So you can back off!
And one more question,
Why are you so orange?

Fragments of UPDATES

You know what I'm happy about? Spring is here (at least in South Texas).

It's time to UPDATE you on my life.

COMIC BOOK THOUGHT UPDATE:

I was reading some early 80's Avengers lately (some just sit on the back of my toilet perpetually). And ya know, what's the point of Wonder Man? He's terrible....as in terribly boring. Boring personality, boring powers, boring costume, boring, BORING, BORING. Why did he exist as a reoccurring character in the freaking Avengers for decades? Who likes Wonder Man? Was he anyone's favorite character in the history of mankind? He sucks. He's stupid. Also, he's boring.

LOS SPURS UPDATE

Just when I thought we'd land in the lottery again, they get good. Blah.

MASS SHOOTING UPDATE

Did you hear about the shooting?

Just kidding of course you did, there's one just about every other week.

CONCERT(S) UPDATE:

Taking C (just turned 12 in March) to her first rock concert in June. Weezer!! (Pixies-Weezer in Austin). If you would have told me in December of 1996 after my first Weezer concert I would be taking my 12 year-old daughter to a Weezer concert 22 years later I think I would have flipped my lid. She's excited and so am I. In the meantime I will be going to the Breeders show in Austin a few weeks. One of those bands I have always had on my list. Should be a great one.

MUSIC UPDATE

I have been loving Sufjan Stevens "Carrie and Lowell". It has become my favorite album of his. Soul crushingly sad, amazing, beautiful. Listen to it and let it into your heart.

Also, Weezer's White Album is still so good. (review forthcoming sometime in the 2020's).

I know these albums are a couple of years old but they've been my go-to on and off for two months.

WE WENT MARCHING UPDATE

It felt good to do something, even if it won't change immediately.

SICK BURN

Shared this on FB and my sister pointed out that she had a grammar mistake on it. Like, who cares sis? ITS A GREAT POSTER. Also, she didn't comment on anything else or like the photos. So I am deleting her comment right this second.

H: He said he wanted to wear this Beatles shirt ("All You Need is Love")

C - Hard to read but says Humans > Guns.

E: This poster was a big hit. It is also true. A TRUE INDISPUTABLE FACT

GUN CONTROL UPDATE:

I AM COMING FOR YOUR GUNS.

MOVIE UPDATE

I saw COCO. It was good. Surprisingly I didn't cry but I came close.

BLOG UPDATE

Blog is now updated. Good night to you, don't forget to practice being kind, even when it's hard. That's when you're really tested and your character shows.
